A student from Galaxy Middle School in Deltona, identified as 15-year-old Isaiah Jones, is facing charges of possessing a firearm on school property after another student found a video on Instagram and reported it on Tuesday evening, which led to the identification of Jones and another student, who helped film the video.
In the video, Jones points a handgun directly at the camera, proceeding to remove the magazine and demonstrating that it contained at least one round of ammunition.
When questioned by deputies, Jones admitted to recording the video in the restroom but claimed it was an old video. However, investigators suspect that the gun used in the video is a 9mm firearm recently stolen during a car burglary in Deltona. The owner of the stolen weapon reported its disappearance from the glove box of his vehicle on May 5. Although the owner believed he locked the car, there were no apparent signs of forced entry.
The ongoing investigation may lead to additional charges in the case. This incident marks the second time a juvenile defendant was arrested with a stolen firearm. Just last week, a 13-year-old Deltona boy was charged with multiple car break-ins, one of which involved the theft of another handgun.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood is taking this opportunity to remind gun owners that leaving firearms unsecured in vehicles makes them susceptible to theft, potentially placing them in the wrong hands and leading to tragic consequences.
