A DeLeon Springs man is now in custody after a violent altercation unfolded in the early hours of Friday morning. Thomas Arney, 38, has been apprehended and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon following an incident that left his friend injured and shaken.

Authorities were swiftly dispatched to the scene on Desoto Avenue shortly after 4 a.m. in response to reports of a shooting. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was already en route to the hospital for medical treatment when deputies arrived.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the altercation transpired after a night of outdoor drinking between Arney and his friend. Tensions escalated between the two individuals, ultimately resulting in a violent confrontation. Arney alleged that his friend became increasingly aggressive and broke windows in nearby vehicles. It was during this heated encounter that Arney purportedly discharged two rounds at his friend's legs.

However, an eyewitness of the altercation attested that the victim posed no immediate threat to Arney before using force. Contrary to Arney's claim of self-defense, the witness stated that Arney fired deliberate shots at both of the victim's legs and pistol-whipped him in the head while he was down.

Despite the ongoing investigation, the victim has thus far declined to cooperate with authorities.

Following an investigation, Thomas Arney was taken into custody and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail. He currently faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and remains detained with a bond set at $25,000.
