West Volusia Historical Society Honors Black History Month and Offers Walking Tours

The DeLand House is temporarily closed for restoration, refurbishing, and re-interpretation, but the West Volusia Historical Society still has much going on for visitors to enjoy. For the month of February, there are several events to consider, including two events that honor February as Black History Month.

Wednesday, February 14:  Walking Tour -  Stetson University Historic District.

Walk through the historic district of this beautiful campus and learn how it grew from a single academy building in 1884 to the magnificent buildings around the Holler Fountain. Tour departs at 10:30 a.m. from WVHS Conrad Educational & Research Center, 137 W Michigan Avenue in DeLand. Advance reservations required. Call 386-740-6813. Tuesday, February 20, 2024: Local History Talk - African American Museum of the Arts.

Mary Allen, museum CEO will share the history of the AAMA and its enriching programs. Founded in 1994, this museum is the only one in the area dedicated primarily to African American cultures and art. Chairman of the Board, Reggie Williams will discuss the expansion plans for the campus. WVHS Conrad Educational & Research Center, 137 W Michigan Avenue in DeLand. 6 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Saturday, February 24, 2024: Local History and Lemonade

This annual event highlights Black history struggle and triumph in West Volusia. Hear from local leaders, enjoy local talent, and celebrate the Black community with the West Volusia Historical Society and friends. Special guests include Joyce Cusack, former member of the Florida House of Representatives and filmmaker Kathy Hersh who will share information about two new historic plaques in downtown DeLand. Vernon Burton, Mayor of Lake Helen, will share his experiences, focusing on his path to civic engagement and local politics. Following the program, walk through the Burgess Pavilion, originally constructed in 1926 as the first hospital to serve West Volusia’s black citizens. 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Free and open to the public. Burgess Pavilion at DeLand Memorial Hospital is located at 230 N. Stone Street in DeLand.

Wednesday, February 28, 2024: Walking Tour -  Old Northwest Residential Historic District.

See many architectural landmarks and hear stories of intriguing pioneers. Tour departs at 10:30 a.m. from WVHS Conrad Educational & Research Center, 137 W Michigan Avenue in DeLand. Advance reservations required. Call 386-740-6813.
