Volusia County is gearing up to offer an essential service for its residents by hosting a free household hazardous waste collection event on Friday, October 21, 2023, at the Ormond Beach Public Works Department at 501 Orchard Street in Ormond Beach, and on Saturday, October 22, 2023, at the New Smyrna Beach Public Works Department, situated at 124 Industrial Park Drive in New Smyrna Beach, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. both days.
It is important to note that only household hazardous waste will be accepted, including household solvents, automobile batteries, household batteries, pool chemicals, pesticides, motor oil, gasoline, old paint, and other common household chemicals. These materials will be collected and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
County officials emphasize the importance of not mixing chemicals before disposing of them at the event, as such actions could pose health and safety risks. Furthermore, the event will extend a helping hand to individuals who require proper disposal of insulin needles in approved disposable containers only.
Traffic will use a one-way entry and exit route, and attendees are kindly requested to remain in their vehicles throughout the event.
For those unable to participate in the collection event, disposal of the mentioned items is accepted year-round at the Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange, the West Volusia Transfer Station in DeLand, or the swap shop to dispose of these materials.
