Volusia County Council appoints Joseph DeMore as Corrections Director.

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, during its regularly scheduled meeting, the Volusia County Council unanimously approved the appointment of Joseph DeMore, a highly experienced corrections management professional from Butler County, Pennsylvania, as the new director of the Volusia County Corrections Division.

With an impressive career spanning over two decades, DeMore brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role. For the past eight years, he served as the warden of the Butler County Prison, demonstrating exceptional leadership skills and a commitment to efficient corrections management. Before that, DeMore was deputy warden at the Allegheny County Bureau of Corrections in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

DeMore's qualifications extend beyond his extensive experience, as he is a certified jail manager through the American Jail Association and certified corrections executive through the American Correctional Association. Recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field, DeMore currently serves as the President of Pennsylvania Prison's Warden Association and was honored as the Pennsylvania Warden of the Year in 2022.

“I am excited for the opportunity to lead the Volusia County Corrections Division and all the great employees working here,” DeMore said. “My plan is to take my time to evaluate and assess the jail operations, which includes programs offered to the inmate population. Some of the early focus will be analyzing the staffing model, training, learning the department culture, and reviewing and updating our policies to ensure what we are doing, falls in line with nationwide best practices.”

Assuming his new responsibilities, DeMore will oversee the Volusia County Correctional Facility and the Volusia County Branch Jail. These institutions collectively employ nearly 300 sworn officers who diligently supervise an average daily population of 1,350 inmates.

“Most importantly,” he added. “I want to engage and listen to input from all the staff members working on the front line. I am really looking forward to working with the team in place.”

Joseph DeMore will assume the duties of his new position on July 31, marking the beginning of a promising chapter for Volusia County's correctional facilities.
