Volusia County Beach Safety offers lucrative opportunities for Summer Lifeguards

In anticipation of the approaching summer season, Volusia County Beach Safety is actively recruiting part-time lifeguards to ensure the safety of beachgoers. As a part of its robust recruitment drive, the organization has introduced an enticing starting pay of $17 per hour, complemented by the chance to earn up to $1,750 in bonuses.

Swim tryouts are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 2 and 16 at the Ormond Beach YMCA, at 500 Sterthaus Drive, Ormond Beach. Another set of tryouts is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 9 and 23 at the Port Orange YMCA, at 4701 City Center Parkway in Port Orange.

Prospective candidates must meet specific criteria, including being at least 16 years old by June 1. They must demonstrate the ability to swim 500 meters freestyle in under 10 minutes, cover 50 yards freestyle in less than 30 seconds, and complete a half-mile run in under 3:15. Successful applicants will undergo a comprehensive screening process, which includes a background check, physical examination, and drug screening.

Individuals interested in employment must attend one of the 2024 tryouts and actively participate in Volusia County Beach Safety's mandatory lifeguard recruit class. This class involves 48 hours of ocean rescue training. Additionally, candidates must complete a 40-hour first responder class and CPR course or provide proof of equivalence. A lucrative $750 recruit sign-on bonus awaits those who successfully fulfill the recruit class requirements, with an additional $1,000 bonus available for individuals committing to a specified number of days during the beach season.
