Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood has taken decisive action in response to the upcoming unpermitted and potentially disruptive "Orange Crush" event taking place this weekend by designating a Special Event Zone for the beachside area. The move comes as authorities aim to ensure public safety and maintain order during this weekend's festivities.
According to officials, the “Orange Crush” event is a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) beach bash, that has been held annually since the 1980s.
Individuals within the designated special event zone which spans South Atlantic Avenue (A1A) from the Granada Boulevard bridge in Ormond Beach to the Dunlawton Avenue bridge in Port Orange should brace themselves for stringent law enforcement measures and a zero-tolerance policy for any violations.
The implementation of the special event zone begins today, Friday, May 5, at 3 p.m. local time and will remain in effect for as long as necessary to safeguard the well-being and interests of the general public. However, if the unpermitted event loses momentum and dissipates, the zone designation will be lifted accordingly.
