Volusia County Council proclaims June 6, 2023, ‘Sheriff Chitwood Day.’

In a show of appreciation for his unwavering dedication to law enforcement, the Volusia County Council Members came together during Tuesday's council meeting to honor Sheriff Michael J. Chitwood and his outstanding contributions to Volusia County. Councilmembers unanimously approved the proclamation of June 6, 2023, as "Sheriff Michael J. Chitwood Day" to serve as a testament to the remarkable achievements of this dedicated law enforcement professional.
The proclamation urges residents of Volusia County to stand behind Sheriff Chitwood in his relentless efforts to protect the community and combat hate groups.
Sheriff Chitwood's illustrious law enforcement career began in 1998 when he first began his service as an officer and detective in the Philadelphia Police Department. Over the years, he served as the police chief for Shawnee, Oklahoma, and later for Daytona Beach, Florida, before being sworn in as the esteemed Volusia County Sheriff in 2017.
Throughout his tenure as sheriff, Sheriff Chitwood has consistently exhibited an unwavering dedication to preserving peace and protecting residents and their property while tirelessly enforcing all laws while actively working toward crime detection and prevention. With a substantial responsibility overseeing more than 800 employees and 200 volunteers, Sheriff Chitwood has upheld the highest professional standards, ensuring the delivery of comprehensive crime prevention programs and community-based law enforcement services in various regions, including the unincorporated areas, Deltona, DeBary, Pierson, and Oak Hill.
One of Sheriff Chitwood's notable accomplishments has been the establishment of strong community partnerships, which have contributed significantly to maintaining public safety. In addition, his visionary leadership has led to the establishment of the VSO Training Academy, enabling the professional development of law enforcement personnel.
Furthermore, Sheriff Chitwood's commitment to embracing technological advancements and securing necessary equipment has played a pivotal role in enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement operations.
