Ribbon cutting set for new Raptor Exhibit at Marine Science Center

Excitement is brewing in Volusia County as officials prepare to cut the ribbon for the highly anticipated Raptor Education and Conservation Exhibit at the Marine Science Center at 100 Lighthouse Drive in Ponce Inlet. The ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, December 12, marking a significant milestone in the Center's commitment to wildlife education and conservation.

“We look forward to welcoming the community to this event that celebrates the intersection of education, conservation, and the beauty of our raptor residents," said Manager Chad Macfie.

Dedicated to the permanent raptor residents of the Marine Science Center, the exhibit provides a home for birds that, due to injuries, cannot be returned to the wild. The exhibition can accommodate six birds at a time, featuring a rotating selection of screech owls, red-shouldered hawks, red-tailed hawks, Cooper’s hawks, peregrine falcons, and great horned owls.

Beyond serving as a sanctuary for these majestic birds, the exhibit can become a hub for education and conservation initiatives, where visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the vital role raptors play in the environment and discover ways to create wildlife-friendly landscapes. According to a release, the current habitats will be converted into much-needed hospital rehabilitation space for the 1,100-plus sick and injured birds taken in by the Marine Science Center each year. 

Funding for this exceptional project comes from various sources, including a $208,298 Volusia ECHO Grant, $150,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act revenue loss provision, and $125,000 in community donations facilitated by the Friends of Marine Science Center.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, admission to the Raptor Exhibit and Marine Science Center will be free from 9 to 10 a.m. on the day of the ribbon-cutting ceremony. On regular days, admission to the Raptor Exhibit is included with the general admission to the Marine Science Center.
