Volusia County officials are closely monitoring an impending storm system poised to impact the region, with effects expected to persist from today through the weekend, affecting both inland and coastal areas. The National Weather Service has issued multiple alerts for Volusia County, including a high rip current risk, a high surf advisory, and a coastal flood watch.

In anticipation of the approaching storm, Volusia County will initiate preparatory measures by removing all port-o-lets, trash receptacles, and dog bag dispensers along the beach by the end of the day on Thursday, December 14. These amenities will be reinstated once conditions permit. Coastal showers may also face water shut offs if conditions worsen.

The storm is forecasted to bring significant rainfall, impacting coastal and inland communities. Residents are encouraged to prepare their properties by cleaning out gutters and exercising extreme caution if roadways become inundated with water.

County staff will regularly inspect walkovers and ramps and access points may temporarily close if erosion occurs.

Individuals with plans to visit the beach during this period should take necessary precautions for their safety. Officials recommend refraining from entering the water as conditions continue to deteriorate. However, for those who choose to do so, it is advised to enter the water in front of a staffed lifeguard tower and remain in waist-deep water, firmly gripping the bottom.

Additionally, individuals should pay attention to posted warnings and flags, closely monitor children and inexperienced swimmers, and strictly adhere to lifeguard instructions.

The National Weather Service has forecasted an El Niño weather pattern for the upcoming winter season with increasing rainfall and a higher likelihood of severe weather events.
