A tense situation unfolded earlier today at DeLand Middle School as local authorities swiftly responded to a Fortify Florida alert regarding the presence of a gun on campus.
At 2:02 p.m., the DeLand Police Department responded to the middle school off Aquarius Drive to investigate the alarming report. For the safety of students and staff, the school was immediately placed on lockdown as officers established a secure perimeter around the premises.
Within minutes, law enforcement managed to locate a juvenile with the firearm concealed within the juvenile's backpack. Thankfully, there were no reports of the young individual threatening or attempting to harm anyone with the weapon.
The juvenile, whose identity has not been disclosed, was promptly taken into custody by authorities and transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice, where further proceedings will take place to address the incident.
After a thorough evaluation and ensuring no remaining safety concerns were present, school officials, in coordination with law enforcement, decided to lift the lockdown, resuming normal activities.
