The Volusia County Council, the Daytona Beach International Airport leadership, and Avelo Airlines representatives gathered last week to celebrate the commencement of two new nonstop flights to and from New Haven, CT, and Wilmington, DE.
Marking the beginning of the new service, on June 22, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the airport, followed by a warm welcome reception for the arriving passengers of an inaugural flight from New Haven, CT, while passengers arriving from Wilmington, DE, were greeted on June 23, with goodie bags, cake, and both flights being honored with a traditional water salute from the airport's Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) crew as part of the warm welcome.
According to a news release, Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said the airline is excited to begin service to Daytona Beach.
“Daytona Beach – it’s officially time to say hello to Avelo! We are excited to begin service to Southern Connecticut and Philadelphia, bringing Avelo’s low fares, industry-leading reliability, and caring service to Daytona Beach,” said Levy. “These routes also offer Connecticut and Philly-area Customers with easy hometown airport access to everything Daytona has to offer just in time for summer.”
During Thursday’s ceremony before the flight arrival, Airport Director Karen Feaster thanked the airport and airline implementation team for all the work leading up to the inaugural day, highlighting the positive economic boost of two new flights.
“The economic impact of these two new weekly Avelo fights is estimated at more than $5 million annually,” said Feaster. We are hopeful these two new flights are just the beginning of expanded service options here and looking forward to a great partnership with Avelo.”
According to a 2023 study by the Florida Department of Transportation, Daytona Beach International Airport's overall yearly economic impact is $3.2 billion, underscoring its significance as an economic powerhouse in the region.
In April, Avelo Airlines announced that it would commence ultra-low-cost carrier services at Daytona Beach International Airport. The flights to and from New Haven operate on Thursdays and Sundays, while the flights to and from Wilmington are available on Fridays and Mondays. Avelo Airlines is the first ultra-low-cost carrier to serve Daytona Beach International Airport, bringing affordable travel options to the region.
