Volusia County Mosquito Control is intensifying its fight against mosquitoes by targeting their breeding grounds in old tires by holding a tire amnesty event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at the Volusia County Road and Bridge equipment staging site at the intersection of Blackburn Road and South County Road 3 in Pierson. Event entrances will be marked by flags, and dedicated staff will be present to guide residents through a convenient drive-thru, and drop-off route.
Mosquitoes are known to lay eggs in stagnant water, and to mitigate this concern, Volusia County residents are encouraged to participate in the tire amnesty event, where they can dispose of up to 20 tires per person at no cost.
For other ways to combat mosquitoes, Volusia County Mosquito Control always advises residents to follow the “5 D’s” of mosquito prevention:
- Dusk – Avoid being outdoors when the sun is setting.
- Dawn – Sunrise is also a prime time for mosquito activity.
- Dress – Wear clothing that covers your skin.
- DEET – DEET remains the standard by which all other repellents are judged. Use DEET-based repellents with concentrations that match your activity and always follow the guidelines on the label.
- Drainage – Check around your home and “tip and toss” any standing water within containers, gutters, plastics, and plants.
