On Thursday, Volusia County Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Turie T. Small Elementary School, ushering in a new era for the school with a rich history in Daytona Beach.

Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin, Board Chair Jamie Haynes, Principal Joy Boyd-Walker, and other distinguished guests attended the ceremony.

“This day is very special to me. In 50, 60, or 70 years our story will be told here; that is what history is all about. You are all here to continue the making of history in a community that is so special as this one right here, the community of Turie T. Let us continue to believe in our vision, our mission, and our goal every single day, which is to create a better future for our students," said Dr. Balgobin addressing attendees.

Turie T. Small was the principal of South Street School, which was renamed in 1960 to honor Small, who spent over 50 years in education serving Daytona Beach students.

“Every child in Volusia County is a special gift. Every one of them deserves a wonderful academic education, but every one of them deserves a wonderful place to learn too," said Board Chair Jamie Haynes.

The new school is at 839 Loomis Avenue in Daytona Beach, on a vacant property north of the current elementary school and east of Campbell Middle School. The new school will incorporate natural light, open and collaborative spaces, and energy efficiency.

“The building may be new, but the vision for learning is the same. This is not just a groundbreaking for the building, but a new chapter of growth, success, and new opportunities that will provide a brighter future for our scholars," Principal Joy Boyd-Walker said.
